‘A lifeline for dirty cars’: EU backs new air pollution limits, but not until 2035

“The EU has finally voted to clean its air by setting tough limits on pollutants in a move that experts say will save lives and money.

The European parliament agreed on Wednesday 13/09/23 to limit the concentration of several dangerous substances to levels put forward by the World Health Organization (WHO). But after a fierce backlash from centre-right politicians, it decided to push back the date for meeting the WHO’s limits by five years.” See the article here.

We are convinced that 2035 is too late, and that, as usual, we will see the consequences of political procrastination along the way. Millions of EU citizens will continue to suffer because of it, hundreds of thousands will die.

Why? Well, we know of course: “It’s the economy, stupid!

Politics once again is showing us that is not able to reach the bold solutions needed to counteract the greatest crisis humans have ever had to face – the climate, pollution and biodiversity crisis, fast enough to make a real difference.

The EU has one of the strongest environmental legislation in the world, yet, politicians and bureaucrats keep on kicking the can down the road when it comes to go against big fossil fuels, car and wood industries, which are the big culprits for all the climate and pollution mess we are in.

Only California has dared to finally start the fight against them, and hopefully this will be a first that will quickly be followed by others. Fossil fuels’ and other polluting companies must be held accountable for the damages they have caused and are causing to our planet and our health, and must finally pay for that.
